Frequently Asked Questions

Since we have completely redesigned the look and feel of the standard boutique amplifier, we know you have some questions, so dig in!

Components & Tubes

Q. Can you tell me anything about the circuitry that I might want to know?

Answer:

In our quest for tone, we've kept the circuits simple and spend 5-10x more on our internal components than most other boutique amplifier companies. There are also some hi-fi components in our amps that have never been used in a musical amplifier before. We do not do mil-spec wiring as elecricity is not meant to flow in 90 degree angles.

Q. In general, what circuits are they based on?

Answer:

We researched the best tones from the 50's and 60's to help create our OWN modern sound. As industry studio musicians, we wanted to build versitile products (not clones) with the purest tones and the baddest roars the world has ever heard. We've made a point to take off from where the top vintage sounds left off.

Q. NOS tubes?

Answer:

We want to improve on the amps we liked, so the combination of NOS and new-production tubes was the only answer. This provides much more tone with all the stability. You shouldn't ever have to replace tubes in a ToneVille amp!

Q. Where do you source your components like the transformers?

Answer:

Transformers are custom hand-wound in the USA, the chassis are mil-spec custom milled in the USA. All amps are hand-assembled and hand-wired in the USA. We use Celestion Speakers made in England.

Q. Should I upgrade the rectifier to the GZ-34 tube?

Answer:

The two 20-watt ToneVille models come with the 5V4 stock. Back when the GZ-34 tube was hard to come by, companies widely used the 5V4 as a sister replacement tube. The clean tones are almost exact. The noticable difference is when the tubes become saturated, the GZ-34 has about a 10% smoother breakup. If you play mostly in the clean register, no need to upgrade, but for you tone snobs (like us) who like your grit to be hi-fi, the upgrade is worth it's weight in gold.

Q. What kind of warranty do you offer?

Answer:

One year standard manufacture's.

Q. Do you build ahead of orders? What kind of lead time would a buyer expect?

Answer:

Generally our amps have been selling faster than we can build them. Most orders are 4-6 weeks out.

Cabinet

Q. What kind of woods (and stains) do you use?

Answer:

The cabinet is constructed from solid Rock Maple and Black Walnut, hand-picked for the best quality. The woods are all-natural with no stain, and we spray a light but strong catalyzed lacquer finish. The corner joints are constructed using 1/2 blind dovetail joints.

Q. Do you build the cabinets yourself?

Answer:

Yes we do. The woods are from the USA purchased locally in Colorado Springs.

Q. Does your wood cabinet and construction enhance the tone? Why not just save money with pine?

Answer:

Absolutely it enhances the tone. We did A/B testing with cheaper cabinets (including pine) and it made all the difference for us to do it this way. The absence of tolex is also a large benefactor to the tone. The construction of our cabinets is peerless, unlike any other in quality and sturdiness.

Q. Is the ohm selector intended for an extension cab or the Celestion in the combo?

Answer:

The ohm Selector is for both outputs. If you add the extension cab (16ohm Vintage 30), the Ohm selector should be at "8."

Q. Can you tell me about the master volume push-pull and the ToneVille knob thinggy?

Answer:

The Master volume on each amp is a push-pull switch potentiometer which only engages the attenuator when rotated clockwise past the switching mechenisim. The pots in our amps are highest quality sealed PECs for a long, scratch free life. The ToneVille knob is a one-of-a-kind 3-way switch that allows you choose between 3 distinctly different tone capacitors for your mid-range EQ. This feature makes these amps incredibly versatile and tunable for all kinds of venues and room sizes.

Chassis

Q. What is so "custom" about your chassis?

Answer:

Our chassis are 1/8" annodized aluminum, a brand new creation custom-milled for ToneVille. Key features include pem-nuts stamped into the chassis for stability, rivited corners (not welded) to allow air-flow, and a 1/16" gap (almost invisible) from the top of the chassis to the cabinet to allow air flow. The chassis are accurate to the thousandth of an inch and all mil-spec, built locally in Colorado Springs.

Q. Why?

Answer:

There are plenty of boutique amp companies (good and bad) out there to choose from... can you imagine another one going with the flow?

Q. 20 watts may or may not be enough to gig with... just sayin'

Answer:

When you play it, you'll see our 20 watts isn't what you think 20 watts should sound like volume wise. Because of the high quality of components, we are getting way more out of 20 watts than any other amp has before. Read our reviews and you'll note each one boasts about the amount of head-room and over-all volume you can get out of a ToneVille.

Q. No reverb or effect loops?

Answer:

These amps are all about tone. Everything we do, if it improves the tone without costing a fortune, we incorporate it, if it's cool but doesn't improve the tone, we ditch it. Simple circuitry gives purity and clarity. For this reason we do not add effects, effects loops, do-dads, flashy thingies, or bling-bling to our amps.

Q. To be blunt, “why would I drop $2.5K on a new boutique amp when I can get X for half that?”

Answer:

The one thing we want folks to know is that these amps are irreplicable. Retail just on parts alone, is more expensive than buying the amplifier outright. We put "Tone" in our name for a reason, and if that is what you play for... this is the amp for you!
